The Locrian Mode
Extra dark and evil sounding as now we have flattened the fifth (♭5), making it diminished.
You can get to the Locrian Mode by either:
- Adding a Minor Second (♭2) and a Minor Sixth (♭6) to the Minor Pentatonic Scale and flatten the fifth (5➔♭5),
- take the Phrygian Mode and flatten the fifth (5➔♭5),
- start on the seventh degree of the Major Scale and adjust the key,
- start on the second degree of the Minor Scale and adjust the key.
The Diminished Fifth (♭5)
The Tritone acts as a Diminished Fifth (♭5) here, which gives the scale its evil quality. When we harmonise the Locrian Mode, our first chord is Diminished (i°), making it difficult to use.
