The Blues Scale
The Blues Scale adds a Tritone (♭5) to the Minor Pentatonic Scale. Be sure to have mastered the Minor Pentatonic Scale before learning the Blues Scale so you can identify the note that brings the unique colour of the Blues Scale.
The Tritone
The Tritone, The Blue Note, Diminished Fifth and the Devil’s Interval are some of the names for the evilest sounding interval. Be careful not to hang on it too long.
In the Blues, it is often used as a passing tone or in a string bend. In Heavy Metal, you can hang on it a bit longer - think ‘Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath’. It can add tension to your music and catch the ear.
